Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, Gone Girl definitely did not fail to deliver the suspense and bone-chilling effects of suburban sociopathy. The movie was masterfully directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, The Social Network) who, once again, teamed up with Grammy and Academy award winning duo, Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor (better known as the frontman for Nine Inch Nails) who delivered a creepy and chilling score that helped set the tone for such a disturbing film. The screenplay was written by the author of the original novel, Gillian Flynn. I often enjoy watching films that were adapted by the original authors, because they do a better job at remaining authentic and faithful to the original story, and have a better idea of what parts should and shouldn't be translated in the film version. I began reading the novel and found it to be very entertaining and well written, but, shortly after, I decided to stop reading. I wanted to allow the film version to play out in front of me without the knowledge of what happens in the end. I am glad I made that choice. The trailers set this movie up perfectly. They allow you to know what the central conflict is (the disappearance of the wife, Amy) but they do not give too much away. I was able to sit there, in the movie theater, anxious and excited to see how this story unfolds and find out whether or not the husband, Nick, killed his wife or not. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike play husband and wife, Nick and Amy Dunne. These two actors played their respective roles wonderfully. I will not play spoiler to this film, but I will definitely say that every actor in this movie was perfectly cast. From the two main stars to Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris to Patrick Fugit and newcomer, Carrie Coon, each brought exactly what their character needed to bring this movie to life. Overall, I think this is one of the best movies of 2014 and would be shocked if Gone Girl didn't receive multiple nominations come Oscar season.
